Since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s minority investment in Wrexham A.F.C. took the world by storm, viewers have been glued to every underdog triumph, nail-biting close call, and locker-room celebration. Soccer and documentary fans will be happy to know that FX has officially renewed Welcome to Wrexham for Season 5, as reported by Variety.
The upcoming fifth season promises even more behind-the-scenes access, emotional fan stories, and all the on-pitch action as the team debuts in the EFL Championship, giving viewers the insight they have come to love.
Additionally, FX is bringing soccer fans more content as a brand-new Wrexham-spinoff docuseries Necaxa, following Liga MX’s Club Necaxa, which actress Eva Longoria has a stake in, is set to premiere this summer on the network. Formally known as Bienvenido a Necaxa, the upcoming docuseries will give viewers a fresh look at football culture in Mexico, with actress-producer Longoria working to “reignite the soul of one of Mexico’s oldest and most storied football clubs,” per the synopsis. Reynolds and McElhenny will join Longoria as executive producers of the series.
Founded in 1923, Club Necaxa plays their home games at Estadio Victoria in Aguascalientes and was once a powerhouse of Mexican soccer. With 12 titles and the first to win the double in Mexico (Liga MX championship and the Copa México) in 1932-33, making them the first team to earn the nickname “Campeonísimo.” However, in recent years, the team has struggled with relegation battles, instability, and other shake-ups. The series will explore Necaxa’s storied past, including iconic moments, giving fans hope that the team will “one day rise again.”
“Rob and Ryan helped Wrexham AFC become one of the greatest sports stories of our time, and what has happened in Wrexham, Wales, is truly magical. With Eva Longoria, they’re now teaming to support the dreams and aspirations of the Necaxa fans and Aguascalientes community too,” said Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment in a statement. As we begin the journey alongside our partners at Disney+ Latin America with Necaxa this summer, everyone is excited to see them bring the same love and support to Mexico that they’ll be getting to the fifth season of Welcome to Wrexham as the Club heads into the Championship; the next chapter of its fairytale journey.”
