Nielsen is Adding Amazon Prime Video To its Rating Service

Last month Nielsen TV Ratings announced that they are adding Amazon Prime Video to their rating system. This means when you watch a show through Amazon Prime Video, Nielsen will include that in its ratings on how different programs are doing. For years Nielsen has tracked with cable TV subscribers now as cord cutting grows Nielsen is once again expanding.

There are a few limitations though as Nielsen can only track views from connected TVs including ones on Smart TVs and through streaming players. Netflix has long complained about this, citing that Nielsen’s numbers do not accurately depict Netflix’s viewership.

The good news here is now views on Amazon Prime Video can help a show get on the air or similar content be created. Many studios use this data when deciding what programs they should produce, including major studios. This move could be as big as when Nielsen started to add DVRs to its rating service, dramatically changing the viewership reports for many shows back in 2005. Before that change, if a show was not watched live it was not counted.

Nielsen had first said they would add Amazon Prime Video to their subscription streaming services numbers back in 2018. That was delayed and a year later the service is now live.
