Hulu’s CEO Says it Was a Mistake to Not Offer a Traditional Grid Guide & That Hulu’s User Interface Isn’t “Intuitive”

Recently Hulu’s CEO Randy Freer opened up about Hulu in an interview with Peter Kafka on the Record Media podcast about Hulu. One of the topics he went into was Hulu’s user interface something many have criticized.

When asked about the current Hulu user interface and soon to be added gride guide Hulu’s CEO Randy Free said: “Look, we probably overestimated the willingness or underestimated the ability for people to jump from one side of the Grand Canyon to the other. We built a consumer experience that probably was where things may end up, or where we get to, but it wasn’t as intuitive as we probably should have built. On top of that, we didn’t give consumers a path to walk with us and get there. You aren’t alone in your desire to have a EPG.” (EPG is an industry term for a traditional grid guide.)

Hulu has already announced plans to roll out a new user interface. To achieve this Hulu recently hired a former Tivo executive to take over Hulu’s user experience team. With that Change, Hulu has announced an updated user interface will be rolling out this summer.

One other change coming is how content is displayed. As you scroll around the home page it only shows one TV show or movie at a time. Hulu, with this newly updated app, will add the ability to see a grid of shows on the screen at once. Instead of seeing one show, you will see a handful of shows as you scroll through the guide.

No date has been set for when these other features will hit, but look for them this spring.

Here are some screenshots of what the new Hulu user interface will look like:
