Recently we have been hearing from readers about how it was less expensive to sign up for Internet plus phone service rather than just Internet. So we decided to break it down to see what it really costs. (Don’t worry if you need a home phone. We can help you get a home phone for far less money than Comcast.)
Comcast Internet Plus Phone
Comcast’s phone plus 25 Mbps Internet is advertised at $49.99 a month; however, you have to agree to a two-year contract and the price is only good for 24 months. So what does this plan really cost over the life of the contract?
First let’s look at the fees. There is a $29.95 activation fee. Comcast also now charges $2 a month Voice Technology Fee. Let’s not forget taxes for my state: they cost 18.22%. (You can find your state’s taxes HERE.) You will need a Comcast modem, which costs $10 a month or $240 over the life of the contract.
After the first 12 months the price will range between $83.90 and $101.90 a month. Let’s say an average price of $90. The second year will cost $1,080 and the first year will cost $599.88. So over the life of the contract, before fees and taxes, you will pay $1,679.88, which on average is $69.99 a month.
When you add in all the fees your total cost will be $1,999.83 BEFORE TAXES, which is $83.24 a month on average. Now add in taxes for Texas and your bill will roughly be $95 a month.
So true average cost of the Comcast phone plus Internet is $95 a month once you add in all the fees and taxes.

Comcast Internet Only
Comcast Performance 25 offers 25 Mbps down for $39.99 a month. There is a one-year agreement and the price is locked for one year. You could buy your own modem or pay a $10 a month rental fee. (Buy your own modem it’s the best deal.)
After the contract ends the price will jump to $49.95 a month and you can cancel at any time after the first year.
Total cost for a year if you rent a modem: $599.88. Total cost for two years if you rent a modem: $1,318.76. If you do not rent a modem it will only cost $479.88 for the first year and $1079.76 for the second year.
Total savings over Comcast Internet Plus Phone over two years: $1,200.24. Even if they try to say it costs the same when you break it down internet only is still a better deal.
