DIRECTV Also Raises Satellite TV Prices

On the heels of DIRECTV raising the price of its DIRECTV STREAM service, the company confirmed the price increases will be coming to its core satellite offering as well and take effect on November 5.

Update: DIRECTV later published its list of price increases, which are listed below. The company said the average increase is $5, but the actual range varies greatly. The company also confirmed U-Verse prices would go up by an average of $5 as well, but didn’t list out the specifics.

“Like other distributors, we’re adjusting our pricing because of the higher cost networks are charging to distribute national and local programming,” said a company spokesman. “We remain focused on delivering the best value.”

These increases are just the latest price hikes that TV providers and subscription services have leveled on consumers, who are increasingly forced to make calculations on just how much they’re spending on entertainment content. Last month, Dish Network said it would raise the prices of its satellite service across the board, with the hikes taking effect next week.

The providers have largely blamed the rise of distribution costs, which has led to disputes like the one between DIRECTV and Nexstar or the public clash between Charter and Disney. The media companies, meanwhile, blame the increases on the higher cost to produce content.

With programming costs expected to rise, this isn’t likely the end to the increases in the industry.
