Conviva: Big Screens are the Preferred Way of Streaming With Smart TVs up 37% YoY

Conviva has released its State of Streaming Report for Q4 2021, and one of the biggest takeaways is that viewers prefer watching content on big screens compared to anything else. Big screens continued to dominate viewership globally, claiming 50% of share in every region except Asia.

However, even Asia saw growth in the amount of viewers watching TVs, up 14% share in Q3 to 27% in Q4 2021, which is tied for desktop usage. Mobile devices are the most popular way to stream in Asia, with 40%.

While big screen viewership is on the rise, Connected TVs fell for the first time ever (down 2%) as viewers seemed to trade them in for Smart TVs which are more streamlined and come with built-in features vs. dongle accessories. Smart TVs had a great year, up 37% from Q4 2020.

Globally, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Samsung TV took the top three spots when it came to share of big screen viewing time. Roku is the leader with 31.8% of viewing time, while Amazon Fire TV dropped 3% to 16.5% share.
