Amazon Prime Video Gets Exclusive Streaming Rights for Seattle Sounders

Amazon is continuing to grow as a sports streamer, now making a new deal for local market streaming rights for Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders FC.

Prime Video has a three year deal with the team to be the exclusive streamer of games not aired nationally, within the Washington state area. The deal will begin on August 26 with the Sounders game against the LA Galaxy.

“This is a proud day for our club, as we’re now able to bring our fans Sounders FC matches on the world’s premier video streaming service through a company that is synonymous with our city’s culture,” Sounders majority owner Adrian Hanauer said in a team statement. “On behalf of our organization, I am thrilled to welcome Amazon and Prime Video to the Sounders family.”

This is the second deal with a regional sports network to stream games on Prime Video. In 2019, Amazon became a part owner of YES Network. In March, Amazon announced that it would air 21 Yankees games on the streaming service. That deal was canceled due to coronavirus shortening the MLB season.

With the Sounders being the hometown team for Amazon, this partnership was a good next step in the company’s move toward being a player in the live sports streaming game.

“We’re excited to join forces with Sounders FC to give Prime members around Washington State access to all regionally broadcast MLS matches on Prime Video over the next three seasons,” said Marie Donoghue, VP of Global Sports Video at Amazon. “Sounders FC is a fundamental part of our culture here in the Pacific Northwest, and as a club they have always been at the forefront of innovation in professional sports. We share this common vision for innovation at Prime Video, and are committed to delighting fans and enhancing the value of a Prime membership through sports, and we believe this deal accomplishes just that.”
