ESPN and Disney are bringing a full, real-time animated NHL alternate telecast, the Inside Out Classic, to screens on Sunday, April 5 at 7 p.m. ET. The presentation will run on ESPN+, Disney+, Disney Channel, and Disney XD, with the regular ESPN telecast available alongside it.

The Washington Capitals will take on the New York Rangers in a special presentation of the Eastern Conference rivalry that blends family-friendly IP from the world of Inside Out with live sports data. ESPN and Disney previously experimented with similar alternate telecasts (for example, the 2023 “NHL Big City Greens Classic”). The visually playful presentation is designed to attract casual and younger viewers and give existing fans a fresh way to watch a game.

Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Lewis Black (Anger), Tony Hale (Fear), and Maya Hawke (Anxiety) are returning as voice talent for the animated broadcast. ESPN commentators, Kevin Weekes and Arda Öcal, will wear motion-capture VR headsets and call the game from within the animated environment.

The altcast will use live tracking data in a Pixar-style world called Hockey Island inside the mind of Riley, the protagonist of the Pixar film. Player and puck movement will be driven by NHL EDGE and Hawk-Eye positional data; Sony’s Beyond Sports will convert that telemetry into animated action so emotions from the Inside Out universe skate alongside animated versions of NHL players.

The Inside Out Classic expands the previous Big City Green approach by using Pixar’s established character set and voice talent for an advanced tech-forward cross promotion. ESPN says the presentation will also stream on Disney+ internationally in Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand, South Africa (live, no replay), and Europe. Additionally, the Inside Out Classic will be available on demand in most markets after the live airing.
