YouTube TV today warned customers that Universal Kids channel will be shutting down and removed from the platform, and any DVR recordings of its programs will be deleted next week. The channel, which features a mix of children’s programming, including cartoons, animated series, and live-action shows, is ceasing operations entirely, meaning it will no longer be available on any platform.

In an email to subscribers, YouTube TV announced that Universal Kids will be removed from its lineup starting March 5th at 11:59 PM ET. “We are writing to let you know that starting March 5 at 11:59pm ET, Universal Kids is ceasing operations for all distributors,” the message stated. “That means this channel will not be available on YouTube TV or any other platform.” So make sure to watch all your recordings before they are removed.

Cord Cutters News first broke the news that Universal Kids would be shutting down last month. Now though YouTube TV is warning its customers.

The shutdown of Universal Kids marks the end of a channel that has been a part of the children’s television landscape for several years. The channel, originally launched as PBS Kids Sprout in 2005, underwent a rebranding in 2017, becoming Universal Kids. It offered a mix of acquired and original programming, catering to preschoolers and younger elementary-aged children.

The decision to shut down Universal Kids is likely due to a combination of factors, including the increasingly competitive children’s television market and the growing popularity of streaming services. Many children’s programs are now available on-demand through platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Paramount+, offering greater flexibility and convenience for viewers.

The loss of Universal Kids will be felt by some YouTube TV subscribers, particularly those with younger children who enjoyed the channel’s programming. However, the platform still offers a wide range of children’s content through other channels, including Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and PBS Kids.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the shutdown for YouTube TV subscribers is the impending deletion of DVR recordings. Any programs that viewers have recorded from Universal Kids will be removed from their libraries next week. This means that families who have saved favorite episodes or shows for future viewing will lose access to them.

The deletion of DVR content highlights one of the drawbacks of cloud-based DVR services. Unlike traditional DVRs, which store recordings locally, cloud DVRs are subject to the terms and conditions of the provider. In this case, the shutdown of Universal Kids means that YouTube TV no longer has the rights to store or distribute its content, necessitating the deletion of recordings.

While the loss of Universal Kids and the deletion of DVR content is disappointing for some viewers, it also serves as a reminder of the evolving nature of television. The rise of streaming services has fundamentally changed how we consume content, and traditional linear channels are facing increasing pressure to adapt. The shutdown of Universal Kids is just one example of this ongoing transformation.

YouTube TV subscribers who are affected by the channel’s removal can explore alternative sources of children’s programming on the platform or consider subscribing to dedicated streaming services that offer a wider range of kids’ content. While the loss of Universal Kids is unfortunate, it also presents an opportunity to discover new and exciting shows and channels that cater to the interests of young viewers.
