In a escalating battle over distribution rights, YouTube TV has pulled multiple channels from TelevisaUnivision after negotiations collapsed on their expiring carriage agreement. The blackout, effective immediately on September 30, 2025, affects popular Spanish-language networks including Univision, UniMás, Galavisión, and Telehit, leaving millions of Hispanic viewers without access to essential news, sports, and entertainment programming.
The dispute centers on YouTube TV’s push to relocate these channels from its core $83 monthly package to a separate Spanish-language add-on tier, which would increase costs for subscribers by approximately 18%. TelevisaUnivision, the leading provider of Spanish content in the U.S., views this as discriminatory and an exploitation of market dominance by Google-owned YouTube TV. The company argues that such treatment undermines the networks’ vital role in serving over 60 million Hispanic Americans, contrasting with recent renewals that kept the channels in base bundles on platforms like DirecTV and Hulu + Live TV.
YouTube TV counters that the decision stems from low viewer engagement and unjustified fee hikes demanded by TelevisaUnivision over the past four years. With more than 10 million subscribers, the service emphasizes data-driven choices to maintain affordability amid cord-cutting trends. This marks YouTube TV’s second major clash this year, following a near-miss with Fox Corporation.
Impacted users can turn to alternatives like TelevisaUnivision’s ViX streaming app or free content on YouTube’s main platform, which boasts billions of daily Spanish-language views. The standoff highlights growing tensions in the pay-TV landscape, where streamers increasingly challenge traditional cable economics. As Hispanic media consumption surges—projected to drive 20% of U.S. TV growth by 2027—industry watchers predict more disputes unless pricing models evolve.
Here is the email that went out today to customers letting them the channels are going dark:
With YouTube TV, we strive to offer you a wide variety of live programming. To do this, we enter into agreements with network partners, and our decisions about which channels to continue carrying are based on viewer consumption and pricing.
With that in mind, we wanted to let you know that we have been working with TelevisaUnivision to reach an agreement that reflects the value of their content. Unfortunately their current demands aren’t supported by their performance on YouTube TV over the last four years, and despite our best efforts, we’ve been unable to reach a deal. Starting today, TelevisaUnivision content, including Univision and UniMas, will be removed from YouTube TV, as well as any Library recordings you have from these channels. For more information on the impact to our ViX Premium add-on, please visit our Help Center.
You can continue to watch select TelevisaUnivision programming on the Univision Noticias YouTube channel or by purchasing their ViX Premium streaming service.
We hope YouTube TV continues to be your service of choice, but we understand some of our members may want to cancel their subscriptions. As always, family managers have the ability to cancel anytime.
Thanks for your membership,
The YouTube TV team
