This week UBS released its Evidence Lab Streaming TV Monitor report. One part of this report looked at the subscriber growth of live TV streaming services like YouTube TV, Sling TV, and PlayStation Vue. To do this, UBS looked at the number of app downloads each service got in the second quarter of 2019 to see who was growing and how fast.
According to UBS, YouTube TV was the fastest-growing live TV streaming. 42% of all live TV app downloads in the second quarter of 2019 was YouTube TV.
PlayStation Vue saw a drop from 9% of app downloads in the first quarter of 2019 to just 3% of downloads in the second quarter 2019 according to UBS. Sling TV and DIRECTV NOW stayed steady.
Many live TV streaming services do not release subscriber numbers. PlayStation Vue and YouTube TV are two companies that do not give hard numbers. We rely on third-party data like download numbers and surveys to come up with an idea of how popular the services are.
At the start of 2019 it was reported that YouTube TV had crossed the 1 million subscriber mark. PlayStation Vue had reportedly hit somewhere between 600,000 and 800,000 subscribers at the same time.
What do you think of these numbers? Do you agree that YouTube TV is the fastest growing live TV streaming service? Do you agree with the report that PlayStation Vue now makes up just 3% of all app downloads?
