YouTube TV, the leading live TV streaming service with over 10 million subscribers, is set to revolutionize the viewing experience by expanding its popular multiview feature to include non-sports content. In an announcement today, the Google-owned platform announced that, starting in the next few weeks, select YouTube TV members will have the opportunity to experiment with creating custom multiview setups featuring a curated selection of non-sports channels. This marks a significant shift for a feature that has, until now, been primarily associated with sports programming like NFL Sunday Ticket and NCAA basketball tournaments.
This all comes as Roku recently announced a build-your-own Multiview option for services like YouTube TV. Fubo had long been one of the few services to offer a ” build your own multiview with any channels you want. Now, YouTube is expanding its feature to compete with Fubo.
The multiview feature, first introduced in 2023, allows subscribers to watch up to four live streams simultaneously on a single screen, a game-changer for sports fans tracking multiple games. Its seamless integration and server-side processing, which eliminates the need for high-powered devices, have made it a standout offering. Now, YouTube TV is taking this innovation further by testing its application with non-sports content, such as news, entertainment, and lifestyle channels.
The initial phase of this experiment will involve a small group of popular channels, though specific networks have not yet been disclosed. YouTube TV has assured subscribers that the selection will expand gradually, with the aim of offering diverse combinations that cater to varied interests. For instance, viewers might soon be able to watch a split-screen setup featuring a cooking show, a news broadcast, a reality TV series, and a travel documentary—all tailored to their preferences.
This will help YouTube TV to solidify its position as the top pay-TV operator in the U.S., especially as competitors like Hulu Live TV and Sling TV vie for market share.
