YouTube TV, the rapidly growing live-TV service owned by Google, is embroiled in a public dispute with TelevisaUnivision, the leading Hispanic media company in the United States. The conflict centers on the renewal of their distribution agreement, set to expire on September 30, 2025 according to a report by Deadline. TelevisaUnivision has taken to on-air announcements and social media to warn its audience that its networks, including the flagship Univision channel, could be relegated to a premium Spanish-language add-on package on YouTube TV. This potential shift would restrict access for millions of Hispanic households, requiring them to pay extra for programming previously included in YouTube TV’s base $82.99 monthly subscription.

The dispute follows YouTube TV’s recent resolution of a separate carriage standoff with Fox Corp., which nearly led to a blackout but was settled with a last-minute extension and a new deal finalized on August 28, 2025. YouTube TV, launched in 2017, has amassed over 8 million subscribers, positioning it among the top pay-TV operators in the U.S. However, its growth has been accompanied by aggressive price hikes and the elimination of certain channels, such as regional sports networks, to streamline costs. The current negotiations with TelevisaUnivision highlight tensions over how the platform values and positions Spanish-language content.

TelevisaUnivision argues that its networks are integral to the American mainstream, emphasizing Univision’s role as a vital source of news, entertainment, and cultural connection for Hispanic Americans. The company points to successful renewals earlier this year with other major distributors, including DirecTV and Hulu + Live TV, which maintained its channels in their core packages. TelevisaUnivision contends that YouTube TV’s proposal to move its programming to a separate tier undermines its broad appeal and accessibility, particularly for the millions of viewers who rely on Univision for free-to-air and pay-TV content.

The disagreement is notable given the history of TelevisaUnivision’s current CEO, who spent 16 years as a Google executive before taking the helm at the media company. His leadership comes at a time when TelevisaUnivision is adapting to a shifting media landscape, with viewership and advertising dollars increasingly moving from traditional linear TV to streaming platforms. While YouTube TV operates as a paid service, much of TelevisaUnivision’s programming is also available for free on YouTube’s main platform, where its channels collectively boast around 10 million subscribers.

YouTube TV maintains that its carriage decisions are driven by viewer consumption patterns and pricing considerations. The company has suggested that TelevisaUnivision’s performance on its platform over the past four years does not justify the terms being sought in the new agreement. If no deal is reached by the deadline, TelevisaUnivision’s channels could vanish from YouTube TV, potentially alienating a significant portion of its Hispanic audience. The outcome of this dispute will likely set a precedent for how Spanish-language content is valued in an increasingly competitive pay-TV market.
