As the NFL Draft approaches, the league is simultaneously navigating a high-stakes media rights deal for a standalone game, with bidding described as robust by industry sources. The deal, which could involve one of two games, is likely centered on the NFL’s Week 1 international matchup in São Paulo, Brazil, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5, according to reports from the Sports Business Journal. The game is expected to feature the Los Angeles Chargers against an opponent yet to be confirmed, with sources indicating a strong likelihood of the Kansas City Chiefs, the three-time defending AFC champions, being selected. The Chiefs’ involvement would significantly elevate the game’s market value, making it a prime target for broadcasters and streaming platforms.
Sources familiar with the negotiations report that YouTube TV, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), and Amazon have expressed interest in securing the rights. YouTube TV is considered a frontrunner by some insiders, though no deal has been finalized. For YouTube TV, which has held the NFL’s “Sunday Ticket” out-of-market package since 2023, acquiring this game would mark a significant expansion of its NFL portfolio. Unlike “Sunday Ticket,” which retransmits CBS and Fox feeds of Sunday afternoon games, this deal would require YouTube to produce the broadcast independently, potentially necessitating the hiring of talent and production staff or building a team from scratch in a compressed timeframe.
WBD, which has not held NFL rights since TNT’s partial-season package from 1990 to 1997, faces similar logistical challenges. A successful bid would require the company to rapidly assemble a production infrastructure capable of handling a high-profile international broadcast. Amazon, already a player in NFL streaming with “Thursday Night Football,” is also in the mix, though its specific plans remain unclear. Representatives from the NFL and all potential rights holders declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations.
The Brazil game, which streamed exclusively on Peacock in 2024 and drew 14.7 million viewers, is a proven draw. That audience made it Peacock’s second-largest streaming event, trailing only an NFL Wild Card game. While NBC’s long-term NFL deal guarantees Peacock an exclusive game each season, it is not guaranteed to be the Brazil matchup, opening the door for other platforms to bid.
The NFL’s scheduling process adds complexity to the deal. The league’s 2025 schedule remains under development, and the opponent for the Chargers in São Paulo is not yet finalized. However, the NFL is keen to maximize the Brazil game’s value, and the choice of teams is critical. One source noted that the specific matchup could determine whether a network or streamer commits to the challenging logistics of broadcasting from Brazil, a market described as remote and operationally demanding. Last year’s Brazil game featured a marquee Eagles-Packers matchup, underscoring the league’s strategy of pairing high-profile teams for international games.
The Chargers, as the designated home team, have the option to “protect” two of their nine home matchups from being played abroad to preserve high-revenue games for their local market. Sources confirmed that the Chargers did not protect any of their divisional games this year, prioritizing potentially lucrative non-divisional matchups against teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, or Washington Commanders. This decision leaves the Chiefs, a non-divisional opponent, available for the Brazil game, further fueling speculation about their involvement.
The timing of the deal aligns with key industry events. YouTube and WBD are scheduled to hold their upfront presentations on May 14, while Amazon’s is set for May 12. NFL VP of Broadcast Planning and Scheduling Mike North recently indicated that the league’s full schedule is likely to be released between May 13 and 15. This compressed window adds urgency to the bidding process, as potential rights holders must weigh the costs and logistical demands against the prestige and viewership potential of a globally televised NFL game.
As the NFL continues to expand its international presence, the Brazil game represents a unique opportunity for platforms to align with one of the world’s most valuable sports properties. With competitive bidding underway and the Chiefs potentially headlining, the outcome of this deal could reshape the NFL’s media landscape for the 2025 season.
