Back in 2023, YouTube raised the price of its YouTube Premium subscription to $13.99 per month. Later that year, those with grandfathered plans started to get notices that their plans weren’t safe from the price hike. Still, some subscribers were lucky enough to keep their lower monthly prices, until now.
9 to 5 Google reports that more users are getting emails, letting them know that they’ll be seeing a price hike on their next billing cycle.
“We don’t make these decisions lightly,” the email says, “but this update will allow to continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube.”
Some of the users facing higher prices now have been subscribed since the days of YouTube Music Key, which launched in 2014 and rebranded as YouTube Music in 2018. With the rebrand, some customers were grandfathered in to the new plans and were able to keep their old pricing.
YouTube Premium subscriptions currently cost $13.99 per month. If you want a family plan that allows multiple accounts to watch ad-free, you’ll pay $22.99, allowing five family members to use YouTube Premium at once. Student plans cost $7.99 a month for one person. A subscription allows you to watch YouTube ad-free and download videos for offline viewing.
