For a year now YouTube has been in a fight with ad blockers as it tries to find ways to stop users who try to skip ads. Recently we have seen multiple efforts to push customers to YouTube Premium, a $13.99 a month subscription service that lets you skip ads and includes other benefits.
Some of the efforts in the past included cutting customers off after a few video views and pop-up ads promoting YouTube Premium.
Now YouTube has launched a far more aggressive effort to stop ad blockers. YouTube has started muting audio and skipping to the end of videos for customers who use ad blockers, according to a post on Reddit.
This battle has been going back and forth since YouTube started to crack down on users who use ad blockers to skip ads. For now, YouTube seems determined to make watching videos with an ad blocker as difficult as possible to force as many customers as possible to subscribe or watch the videos with ads.
This move to fight ad blockers comes from many factors, but Google may be looking at the need to combat dropping ad revenues. Recently ad revenue has dropped across all markets as advertisers cut back on what they pay to YouTube and others. This is brought on by many factors including a growing number of places they advertise.
