YouTube has launched a significant update aimed at addressing long-standing user frustrations with end screen overlays that often obscure the final moments of videos. These pop-ups, typically featuring recommended videos, channel links, or subscription prompts, have been a point of contention for viewers who feel they detract from the viewing experience. In response, YouTube is rolling out a new Hide button, giving users the ability to instantly remove these overlays and enjoy an unobstructed view of a video’s closing seconds.
The Hide button, as reported by TechCrunch, appears in the top-right corner of the screen when an end screen is displayed. With a single tap, users can dismiss the overlays, ensuring the final shot of the video remains fully visible. For those who change their mind, a Show button allows the overlays to reappear. However, this feature is not a permanent fix; it applies only to the video being watched, meaning users must manually hide end screens for each video if they prefer a clean viewing experience.
The decision to introduce this feature stems from widespread user feedback highlighting how end screens can disrupt the emotional or narrative impact of a video’s conclusion, according to information from a YouTube support page. The platform’s internal testing revealed that allowing viewers to hide end screens had minimal impact on engagement. Data showed a decrease of less than 1.5% in clicks on end screen elements when the Hide button was available, suggesting that the feature strikes a balance between user control and creator promotion.
In addition to the Hide button, YouTube is phasing out another underutilized feature: the hover-to-subscribe button. Previously, desktop users could hover over a channel’s watermark to access a quick subscription option. However, YouTube found that this feature contributed to less than 0.05% of total subscriptions and often added unnecessary visual clutter. By removing it, the platform aims to streamline the viewing experience and focus on more effective ways to connect viewers with creators.
While creators can still leverage end screens and branding elements to promote their content, the introduction of the Hide button empowers viewers to decide when and how they interact with these features. The global rollout of the Hide button is already underway, with many users able to access it immediately. Although a permanent toggle to disable end screens remains unavailable, this update signals YouTube’s commitment to responding to user feedback and enhancing viewer control. By prioritizing a cleaner, more flexible interface, YouTube is taking steps to ensure its platform remains a preferred destination for video content consumption.
