A healthy dose of 90s nostalgia is coming to Disney’s streaming service.
Marvel Animation’s new X-Men ‘97 series will be available to stream on Disney+ March 20 and pick up where the 1992 original left off.
The original X-Men animated series ran from 1992 to 1996, releasing five seasons that are all available to watch on Disney+. The series finale, “Graduation Day,” ended with an ailing Professor X leaving Earth to heal severe injuries, leaving the X-Men and longtime villain Magneto to work together to build a better future for mutants. While the storyline offered some closure to the show, it also opened the door to potential new stories.
The new trailer shows that the world seems to still be struggling with accepting mutants as the heroes fight the world’s evils and try to honor Professor X’s memory.
X-Men ‘97 will also see some of the original voice actors reprise their roles including Cal Dodd as Wolverine, George Buza as Beast, Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Lenore Zann as Rogue, and Alyson Court as Jubilee. The cast also includes Jennifer Hale, Ray Chase, Anniwaa Buachie, JP Karliak, AJ LoCascio, Matthew Waterson, Jeff Bennett, and Holly Chou.
In December, Marvel released a four-issue comic — also called X-Men ‘97 — written by Steve Foxe, known for Dead X-Men and Dark X-Men, to serve as a companion story ahead of the show’s release. The comics are illustrated by Salva Espin and cover art by Todd Nauck.
