Each streaming platform has its group of dedicated members though more streaming services are available now than a few years ago. Which ones are the most popular this year?
Statista surveyed thousands of paid subscription members ages 18 to 64 from July of 2020 through June of 2023 and made a list of the top 8 for the last two years.
The surveys found Netflix to be the most popular streaming service with 69% of respondents reporting they’re members, a steep drop from 79% in 2021.
Amazon Prime Video was the next most popular streaming service with 67% of respondents saying they hold a membership. That’s down just a bit from 2021 when 69% of those surveyed had an Amazon Prime account.
Hulu and Disney+ tied for third place. Disney+ stepped up a bit from 52% in 2021 to 53% in 2023. While Disney gained subscription numbers, Hulu saw a decline. 55% of respondents in 2021 said they had a Hulu subscription, now only 53% do.
In 2021, Max was still HBO Max and 33% of respondents said they had a subscription. Now rebranded as Max, 40% of respondents say they have a membership. Apple TV also saw a significant jump in subscribers, up to 30% this year. In 2021, only 20% of those surveyed used Apple TV.
Paramount+ and Peacock weren’t available yet in 2021, though both streaming services made the top 8 list of most popular streaming services. Paramount+ is sixth on the list with 32% of respondents holding a subscription. Peacock came in eighth with 30%.
There are a growing number of new streaming services in the running now. Next year could have a very different top 8 list. Some platforms are bundling services together to stay competitive with emerging services.
