What Was That HBO Max Integration Test Email About?

Many HBO Max subscribers received an email Thursday night with the subject “Integration Test Email #1.” The body of the email said, “This template is used by integration tests only.”

While there weren’t any suspicious attachments or links (or any content at all), some Cord Cutters News readers asked if this was a phishing attempt. It turns out, the email was just a simple mistake.

Twitter users, including WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, quickly jumped online to crack some jokes.

In the end, HBO Max also took to Twitter to explain the mistake, saying “We mistakenly sent out an empty test email to a portion of our HBO Max mailing list this evening. We apologize for the inconvenience, and as the jokes pile in, yes, it was the intern. No, really. And we’re helping them through it.”

The mystery is solved and “Integration Test Email” became a trending topic on Twitter, so it looks like HBO Max scored some free publicity while carrying out their test and mistakenly involving subscribers.

And finally, a quick warning to be on the lookout for similar emails in the coming days. SocialProof Security CEO Rachel Tobac tweeted in response to the mishap and jokes that we should all be on the lookout for copycat emails from criminals who are trying to get your personal information. Tobac tweeted: “Also from a social engineering perspective, there’s prob some criminals out there trying phishing emails on the tails of this goof like “HBO Max Integration Test #2: click here to unsubscribe from these emails”. Heads up so your family & friends know to expect it + don’t click.”
