Turner Classic Movies has long been a staple for movie fans and has built a name for itself as a source of great films spanning all genres. From the classics to the most recent releases, Turner Classic Movies is “Where Then Meets Now.” In light of recent layoffs and other cost cutting measures Warner Bros. Discovery has undergone, what does the future of Turner Classic Movies look like?
Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson had an emergency call with Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav over the teetering fate of Turner Classic Movies after some leading team members were let go.
Steven Spielberg’s production company Amblin released a statement encompassing the sentiments of the abovementioned, as reported by IndieWire.
“Turner Classic Movies has always been more than just a channel. It is truly a precious resource of cinema, open 24 hours a day seven days a week. And while it has never been a financial juggernaut, it has always been a profitable endeavor since its inception. Earlier this week, David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, got in touch to talk about the restructuring of TCM. We understand the pressures and realities of a corporation as large as WBD, of which TCM is one moving part.”
David Zaslav is on board with this message and is an avid fan of the classic movie channel as well. He hopes the changes underway with Warner Bros. Discovery aids Turner Classic Movies rather than shutter it forever.
“It’s clear that TCM and classic cinema are very important to him. Our primary aim is to ensure that TCM’s programming is untouched and protected. We are heartened and encouraged by the conversations we’ve had thus far, and we are committed to working together to ensure the continuation of this cultural touchstone that we all treasure,” Vanity Fair reports the trio concluded after the discussion.
For now, the fate of TCM is still on shaky grounds, however, the rise in support for the network will be a huge driving factor as Warner Bros. Discovery makes some hard decisions regarding how to proceed with the beloved classic channel.
