Warning: I Wouldn’t Buy a Fire TV Box Right Now

Yesterday I gave a warning about buying an Apple TV right now, and today I want to give a similar warning to anyone looking at a Fire TV.

As best I can tell we are a month or so away from a new Fire TV hitting the market. Typically Amazon will do a price drop and/or a sale to clear out the older models just before the new Fire TV hits the market. My suggestion is to hold off until the sale happens or the new Fire TV hits the market. (If you can wait for the price drop or new device.)

As best we can tell the new Fire TV will add 4K HDR support to the Fire TV. Even if that is not of interest to you right now I would wait for the current Apple TV to go on sale.

What do I recommend? I would wait for the new 4K HDR Fire TV to come out this fall. That will give you the most future-proof option. Most new TVs are now 4K, and I expect to start in 2018 most new TVs will start to include 4K HDR support. With Netflix and Amazon rolling out more 4K HDR content every week I would wait for the new box to come out.
