Walmart has recently launched its Gadgets to Gift Cards program, an innovative way to dispose of used electronic devices that reduces the amount of waste in landfills. It’s a huge step in the right direction for the environment, and Walmart seems to be leading the way in second-hand electronics, saving you money and saving the planet all at once.

How Does the Program Work?

If you have an old iPod or laptop you don’t have any use for, you can trade them in by filling out an online appraisal form. Then, you can just pack up your items following the directions given to you by the Walmart CExchange program, and ship them away for free.

Once your package is received, Walmart will appraise your devices in about two to four weeks, where you will then be paid however much the item is worth. Though they can’t pay you in cash, Walmart offers a Walmart eGift Card that will allow you to use the funds on Walmart.com or on Samsclub.com, if you’re a member.

What Devices Can I Trade In?

You can trade in any popular electronic device, the site even lists what you can trade in by category and manufacturer. Old cell phones, tablets, video games, consoles, laptops, GPS devices, MP3 players, and cameras are all items you can trade, but keep in mind the value may fluctuate based on your device’s condition.

This program does accept anything virtually in any condition, and it identifies items either as “working and intact” or “broken and damaged.” Even items that are seemingly beyond repair will gain you some credit from Walmart.

“As long as your electronic item appears on our ‘Model Name’ list, we will accept it, irrespective of its condition or function,” Walmart states on its website.

Once they have received the device, Walmart will either re-sell them as used products, send them away for refurbishment, or dispose of them in an environmentally responsible way if they are damaged beyond repair.

Why Should I Trade In My Old Devices?

If you don’t use the devices anymore, what’s the purpose in keeping them? Trading them in will earn you credits that you can use for anything on Walmart.com, and will also reduce potential clutter you may have in your home or office.

Electronics age, and many of us don’t pick up our old iPods or deteriorating gaming consoles anymore. Using the CExchange program won’t just minimize the mess in your house, but the mess littered across our planet. About 50 million tons of e-waste, junk that was once electronic devices, is generated globally every single year. This waste sits in a landfill, potentially releasing toxic chemicals that can easily pollute air and water, threatening both human and wildlife health.

Check out Walmart’s CExchange program right now, it’s a step in the right direction to a cleaner planet and a new age of refurbished electronics.
