Recently Disney shutdown the Disney Channel in most parts of Europe and in Australia. Paramount has also started to shut down channels, including VH1, in other parts of the world. The change here is that VH1 is moving to Pluto TV in Italy.
According to reports, VH1 Italia shut down on January 6, 2024. Now fans of the network in Italy can tune into Pluto TV to find many of the programs on multiple VH1 channels streaming free on Paramount streaming service.
Disney has been using the shutdown of its Disney Channel to grow Disney+. Now it seems that Paramount may be hoping that moving VH1 to Pluto TV can help offset the costs.
Recently Paramount had VH1 up for sale as part of a deal to sell BET. It is unknown if the new deals for BET would still include VH1. (VH1 is now managed by the BET management teams.)
Paramount is reportedly in talks with multiple potential buyers, include BET Chief Executive Officer Scott Mills and Chinh Chu, a former Blackstone Inc. member. The deal will reportedly be for just under $2 billion.
Originally this deal would reportedly include BET cable networks, BET+, a subscription streaming service, and BET studios. VH1 is managed by BET and would reportedly be included, but that is unknown.
Increasingly cord cutting has been growing in Europe. Cord cutting may have grown slower in other parts of the world compared to the United States, but as streaming options become more available in Europe cord cutting has exploded.
