Verizon Wireless has begun alerting customers on some of its older plans that they’ll be seeing a $4 price increase starting in March. But the rate hike isn’t coming without one benefit: More hotspot data.
Verizon will give all customers on legacy plans who are seeing a price increase an extra 5 GB of mobile hotspot data. The extra data will be effective on March 1, the same time that the new rate takes effect.
The telecommunications giant raised rates on its older plans — some of which come with legacy perks like free access to Disney+, Apple Music, and Netflix — in a bid to get customers to switch to newer plans, which now charge you extra for access to some of these services. Many of these freebies were a product of aggressive promotions by the carriers that saw perks like Netflix, Max, and other services thrown in for free. Almost all of these perks are gone, with even T-Mobile switching its customers to the ad-based version of Netflix (it did just add Hulu to customers on its newer plans).
It’s not the only company to raise rates on its service, with a myriad of cable and streaming providers all jacking up the prices on their services over the last year. In August, Verizon tacked on another $10 for its 5G home internet service.
In July, also raised the rates for customers with Mix & Match 1.0 plans. Users were charged $3 extra for Go 2.0, Beyond 2.0, Above, Start 1.0 plans, and $5 more for Single Basic Phone plans. Before that, the older plans saw a $2 price hike in spring of 2022.
