April 22, 2025 — Verizon Communications Inc. announced a robust start to 2025, adding 308,000 5G Home Internet customers, also known as fixed wireless access (FWA) subscribers in the first quarter, pushing its total FWA base to over 4.8 million. This milestone, reported today, underscores Verizon’s aggressive push into high-speed internet services, positioning the company to capture a growing share of the broadband market as competitors like Comcast and Charter Communications’ Spectrum grapple with subscriber losses.

The addition of 308,000 FWA subscribers in Q1 2025 reflects Verizon’s strategic focus on leveraging its 5G network to deliver reliable, high-speed internet to homes and businesses. The company’s FWA service, which uses C-band and millimeter-wave spectrum, offers a compelling alternative to traditional cable broadband, particularly in suburban and rural areas. Verizon’s total broadband connections now exceed 12.6 million, a 13.7% year-over-year increase, driven by both FWA and its Fios fiber service, which added 45,000 subscribers in the quarter.

Verizon remains on track to achieve its ambitious goal of 8 to 9 million FWA subscribers by 2028, a target it reiterated today, bolstered by plans to expand coverage to 90 million households and deploy advanced mmWave solutions for multi-dwelling units.

Verizon’s gains come at a time when cable giants Comcast and Charter’s Spectrum are facing challenges. In recent quarters, both companies reported declines in broadband subscribers, with Comcast losing 19,000 and Charter losing 40,000 in Q2 2023, a trend attributed to increased competition from telecom providers like Verizon and T-Mobile, as well as reduced household mobility and the end of federal subsidies like the Affordable Connectivity Program. These losses mark a shift in the broadband landscape, where cable once held a dominant position.

Looking ahead, Verizon’s planned $20 billion acquisition of Frontier Communications is expected to further accelerate its broadband expansion, adding 9 to 10 million fiber passings by 2028. With a capital expenditure forecast of $17.5 to $18.5 billion for 2025, Verizon is doubling down on network investments to sustain its growth trajectory.

As Verizon continues to redefine broadband connectivity, its Q1 2025 performance signals a transformative moment in the industry, where 5G-powered wireless solutions are reshaping consumer choice and challenging the cable status quo.
