As 5G cell service continues to roll out across the nation, one provider in particular is making a major push to make sure they’re not left behind.

Out of the 4.1 million 5G compatible phones sold so far in the United States, a full 54% of them are on the Verizon network, according to data from M Science. As of the middle of July 2020, Verizon had sold 2.2 million 5G phones. AT&T was well behind in second place at 629,000, T-Mobile was third with 501,000, and Sprint found fourth place with 483,000.

Of course, it’s worth noting that Verizon has been selling 5G phones longer than AT&T and T-Mobile and that they’re the largest cellular provider in the US, so it makes sense they’d have more 5G customers. And on top of that, Verizon closed their purchase of Sprint earlier this year, and estimates show that 85% of Sprint’s customers were 5G ready, giving Verizon a huge built-in base already. But still, they’ve poured millions of dollars into advertising the devices in an effort to stake their place in the market.

With a total of just over 4 million 5G devices in use, the means the United States has around 1.2% of the population with access. Compared to South Korea (13% of their population or 7 million devices) and China (66 million devices or 4.7% of  the population), it’s clear the US still hs a way to go to catch up with the rest of the world.
