United Airlines today announced it will begin testing SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service on flights as early as February, with plans to eventually equip its entire fleet with the high-speed technology. This move promises to revolutionize in-flight connectivity, offering passengers a seamless online experience at 35,000 feet.

The airline first revealed its partnership with SpaceX in September 2024, aiming to “set a new standard of inflight connectivity.” Following successful testing, United expects to launch its first commercial flight with Starlink on an Embraer E-175 this spring. The rollout will continue throughout 2025, with the entire “two-cabin regional fleet” expected to be equipped by year’s end. United also aims to have its “first mainline Starlink-enabled plane in the air” before the end of the year.

In a groundbreaking move, United will offer Starlink internet access for free to all members of its MileagePlus program. This not only significantly improves the quality of in-flight Wi-Fi but also opens up exciting possibilities for passengers and the airline alike.

Beyond enhancing the passenger experience, United sees Starlink as an opportunity to forge new partnerships and offer even more value to its MileagePlus members. The airline hinted at potential collaborations with streaming services to provide a wider range of free entertainment options during flights.

United joins Delta and Hawaiian Airlines in embracing Starlink for in-flight Wi-Fi. SpaceX initially announced its ambition to deliver 350 Mbps internet speeds to aircraft in 2022. Both Delta and Hawaiian have either tested or committed to offering Starlink on their planes.

This initiative comes on the heels of significant advancements for Starlink. In the past year, SpaceX has tested Starlink’s direct-to-cell satellite service with T-Mobile during Hurricane Milton, planned a larger beta test for February, and launched a nationwide satellite texting service in New Zealand.

With its commitment to Starlink, United Airlines is poised to redefine the future of in-flight connectivity, offering passengers an unprecedented level of online access and entertainment while soaring through the skies.
