Tubi, the popular ad-supported streaming service, has announced the five finalists for its groundbreaking “To Be Commissioned” initiative in partnership with The Black List, a platform known for highlighting exceptional unproduced screenplays. This initiative aims to discover and champion diverse stories from both emerging and established writers, bringing them to Tubi’s massive audience of 81 million monthly active users according to a report from Deadline.
From 2,000 to 5
Out of over 2,000 submissions, five screenplays have been selected for further development, with the ultimate goal of receiving a green light for production and distribution from Tubi. The Black List will serve as executive producer for the chosen films.
The Finalists
The five finalists represent a diverse range of genres and perspectives:
- “All Things Considered” by James Choi: A Korean-American mother attempts to reconnect with her son and help him overcome depression through a unique South Korean ritual.
- “Marigold Paradox” by Monisha Dadlani: A couple’s wedding weekend takes a wild turn when their future selves travel back in time to prevent their marriage.
- “Frankentits” by Ellen Meiser: A millennial woman confronts breast cancer with imagination and humor, exploring themes of self-acceptance and resilience.
- “The Chicken Murders” by Nadia Osman: Based on the true story of Zankou Chicken, this screenplay follows an Armenian family fleeing the Lebanese Civil War and building a successful restaurant chain in Los Angeles, amidst family drama and tragedy.
- “Pick Me Up” by V.P. Walling and Mark Skeele Wilson: A gay, pill-addicted gynecologist and a struggling comedian embark on a road trip to rehab, finding recovery and connection along the way.
