TiVo released its viewing trend report for Q4 2020 and there are some interesting findings. The biannual report is gathered from consumer opinion surveys from 4,500+ viewers in the U.S. and Canada, so it’s got some good representation.

One of the findings shows viewers prefer to stream their content via media players like Roku, Fire TV, and Chromecast than on Smart TVs, which is partticularly interesting since sixty-three percent of respondents currently own at least one smart TV.

Perhaps the main reason people prefer streaming on a media player is the sheer level of offerings. Media streamers are able to feature more content providers than any one Smart TV. Of survey respondents indicating they watch streaming video apps on their smart TV or
streaming media player, 49% use the device’s interface to go to the app they want, while only 6% prefer using voice control.

So what’s the preferred choice for a streaming media player? Amazon won the popularity contest with its Fire TV lineup including the FIre TV Cube and Fire TV Stick. Thirty-percent of users report this as their preferred way of streaming. Roku comes in at No. 2 with 28% popularity, followed by Apple TV, Chromecast lagging at 13%, and other devices down from there.

Interested in trying out a new media player? Score Amazon’s Fire TV Stick Lite for 27% off right now.
