Time Warner is Selling Its Last Over-the-Air TV Station

Cable TV

Cable TVIn what is the end of an era, Time Warner is selling WPCH its last over-the-air TV station. Time Warner has owned several over-the-air TV stations dating back to the days when Time Warner and Time Warner Cable were one company.

Back in the mid-2000s Time Warner sold WHAM in Rochester, New York to Deerfield Media. Now Time Warner is selling WPCH, is a independent channel in Atlanta, to Meredith Corp. (WPCH use to air TBS programming free int he Atlanta area.) This will be Meredith Corp.’s eighteenth over-the-air TV station.

The sale seems to be tied to AT&T’s bid to merge with Time Warner. Not sure whether it sees this move as a way to get the sale through the FCC approval process or whether AT&T decided it didn’t want to own the station in Atlanta. Though speculation has been floating around for some time that Time Warner would sell the station or place it in a trust to help avoid an FCC review of the AT&T-Time Warner deal.

Viewers in Atlanta, Georgia should not notice any changes because the station will continue to operate and no deals should change anytime soon. Meredith has already handled the day-to-day operations of WPCH-TV since 2011, and this sale will just transfer full control of the channel to them.
