TikTok Is Slowly Turning Into YouTube With Longer and Horizontal Video Tests

TikTok may be trying to make its app more like YouTube by encouraging creators to post horizontal videos that are over one minute in length to get more views.

Creators who have been using the viral video-sharing app for more than three months can qualify for a viewership boost “within 72 hours of posting,” according to information shared by TikTok users.

According to the requirements, the videos must be longer than one minute and in “landscape,” consist of original content, and use the hashtag #longervideos. The videos can’t be an ad or from a government, politician, or political party account. It must also follow the app’s Community Guidelines and consist of original content.

TikTok has been testing YouTube-style aspects for a while now, but it remains to be seen why TikTok is copying YouTube when other social media platforms have taken on TikTok’s features.

The app exploded in popularity in 2020 with its 15-second clips which allowed for rapid-fire content consumption. Other social media platforms quickly took notice resulting in YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.

TikTok has since experimented with longer videos. In the last few months, the app was reported to be testing 30-minute uploads and 15-minute uploads.

The test was spotted earlier by The Verge.

TikTok wasn’t immediately available for comment.
