For months, we have been waiting for news on Walt Disney’s ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery announced a new streaming bundle that will offer 16 live sports channels and none of the non-sports-related channels. Earlier today, the joint venture announced the name of the new joint venture service. For months, rumored names have been floating around for it, but now we know that the service will be called Venu Sports. They also launched an official website for the new service here.
What is interesting about the new website is it is owned by FOX Corporation, likely giving us insight into who is the main player in this venture, according to Rich Greenfield. What that exactly means is unknown, but it does follow earlier rumors that most of the tech being used for this new venture was being built by FOX.
All three partners are working together on this, but it seems at least FOX will be the backend for the new services, likely using the same tech that runs the Fox Sports streaming. That streaming tech has widely been considered some of the best out there. Yet this will likey be a much larger test for the servers when it launches this fall.
This comes as The Athletic has reported that it expects the price to be between $40 and $50 a month. However, it is possible that the price could be higher. Fox recently said the service will be in the “higher ranges” of the estimates, likely meaning the service will cost between $40 and $50 a month as that was what some companies have reported. This is from Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom conference.
No official final price has been announced for this new service.
So what do we know about this service?
Release Date:
It is reported that this new streaming service will launch in the late summer of 2024. It is hoped to be live in time for the start of the college football season.
Streaming Through Max, Hulu, & Others:
At Warner Bros. Discovery’s 4th quarter 2023 earnings call it confirmed that this new service will be bundled with Max. Disney has already confirmed that you will be able to subscribe to this new streaming service through services like Hulu and ESPN+.
