The Video Player VLC is Working on Launching an Ad-Supported Streaming Service

VLC is a wildly popular video player for computers and other devices. Much loved for its ability to play a wide range of video files for free the service is now reportedly looking at launching a streaming service.

According to an interview with Lowpass, VLC’s president, Jean-Baptiste Kempf, announced that VLC was working on a streaming service. This service would be optional and let anyone using their player watch movies and TV shows and maybe stream live channels for free with ads.”

VLC was quick to add that plans for this ad-supported are not finished and the service is not ready to launch. Kempf also added that the new streaming services would be optional and not forced on anyone.

Ad-supported streaming services are some of the fastest-growing areas in cord-cutting right now. A recent report from Nielsen showed that Tubi, The Roku Channel, and Pluto TV all saw growth last month. Other smaller services are reportedly struggling to turn a profit on ad-supported streaming, though. Recently, we saw Sinclair sell its streaming service Stirr and walk away from owning an ad-supported service.

For now, we will have to wait and see what happens when and if VLC launches this service.
