The Walt Disney Company started to inform customers today that it will be raising the prices of its popular streaming services, Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, starting in mid-October. This change will see monthly subscription fees increase by $1 to $2 across various plans. This price hike was announced last year but is now going into effect.
Disney+ subscribers will experience a $1 increase for both basic and premium tiers. The basic plan will now cost $9.99 per month, while the premium plan, offering ad-free viewing and 4K streaming, will rise to $15.99 per month.
Hulu, another streaming platform under Disney’s umbrella, will also see price adjustments. The ad-supported plan will be $9.99 per month, a $1 increase, and the ad-free plan will jump to $18.99 per month, a $2 increase.
Hulu + Live TV will also see its price go up by $6 a month.
Sports enthusiasts subscribed to ESPN+ will face a $2 increase, bringing the monthly fee to $11.99. The service will continue to include advertisements.
Disney attributes these price increases to the rising costs of content production and licensing. The company aims to maintain a balance between these expenses and its dedication to providing a wide array of movies, TV shows, and sporting events to its streaming subscribers.
Despite the price hikes, Disney remains a dominant force in the competitive streaming market. Its extensive content library, featuring beloved Disney classics, popular Marvel and Star Wars franchises, acclaimed documentaries, and live sports coverage, continues to be a major draw for subscribers.
While the price changes may not be welcomed by all, Disney is confident that the value and diversity of its content offerings will ensure continued subscriber loyalty and attract new customers.
