Do you have a Zapperbox and wish you could DVR channels using DRM? Sadly, though, many are blocked out of DVRing ATSC 3.0 NextGen TV because of Digital Rights Management or DRM is blocked on the device. Now, the team behind the Zapperbox has confirmed to Cord Cutters News that in April 2024 an update will be pushed to customers that will let them DVR programs on ATSC 3.0 channels that are using DRM. Something the box currently can not do.

Not only that but now The Zapperbox will reportedly offer two new features this summer with the addition of offline DRM support. This will let you watch your antenna even if you are offline if the channel has DRM. Also the ability to stream your antenna to multiple rooms is also reportedly in the works. Both of these new features are expected to hit the Zapperbox by software update and new hardware in the summer of 2024.

ATSC 3.0 promises 4K TV, improved sound, better weather alerts, and a ton of other features are coming with the NextGen TV ATSC 3.0 free over-the-air TV. Sadly, though, many are blocked out of the NextGen TV because of Digital Rights Management or DRM is blocked on all external runners.

The Zapperbox already has support for DRMed channels to watch them, but DVRing them has been an issue for many now. This update addresses these issues and makes ATSC 3.0 much more usable. Now you will be able to record DRMed programs and stream them to other TVs around your home.

ZapperBox’s founder, Gopal Miglani, noted when DRM support was added that, “Our team has invented a proprietary process that enables us to field-provision content decryption in a highly secure manner. This achievement underscores the longevity of our hardware platform, the remarkable versatility of our software, and ingenuity of our team. While maintaining the security of the NEXTGEN TV ecosystem, we are committed to safeguarding our customers’ investments in their ZapperBox M1, which will stand as the unparalleled NEXTGEN TV DVR and gateway for years to come.”

According to the ZapperBox they will start shipping The ZapperBox M1 NEXTGEN TV DVR with content security, also known as digital rights management (DRM), on April 8, 2024. By offering support for NEXTGEN TV content security, including DRM-encrypted channels, ZapperBox will be one of only a few boxes to offer DRM support for ATSC 3.0.

The ZapperBox runner and DVR cost $249.95 on Amazon and is one of the first ATSC 3.0 DVR that includes DRM support.
