Elizabeth Banks is known for her unique approaches to films. The actress and executive producer is bringing her creative flair to the upcoming Flintstones reboot and promises it will be a tad more grownup than the kid-friendly origin series.
The new series, Bedrock, will pick up two decades after the original cartoon left off. Fred (Stephen Root) is on the brink of retirement, which is great news for the Slate Rock and Gravel Company he so carelessly and begrudgingly worked for. Baby Pebbles (Elizabeth Banks) is all grown up, ready to embark on her own career.
Also returning are characters Bam Bam (Manny Jacinto), Barney (Joe Lo Truglio), Betty (Nicole Byer), and Clay (Geoffrey James).
Elizabeth Banks has said this version will invoke the crass creativity of a couple of her favorite series, South Park and The Simpsons, yet still be an animated adventure fit for the whole family.
In an interview with TVLINE, Banks said of the show, “We’re still in development. I’m also playing Pebbles, excitedly, and we’re working on it. Oh, I think we still want it to be for co-viewing [by parents with their kids]. It will have adult themes, like all the greats — just like The Simpsons or South Park — but ‘family-ish friendly.’ I mean, I let my kids watch South Park…”
Adding some adult humor to the series is a big change from the original series that aired in the 1960s spanning six seasons. At the time, The Flintstones was the longest running animated series for decades until The Simpsons debuted, so It seems fitting that some of that tone makes it into the upcoming series.
The show is currently in pre-production and there’s no word yet on when it will premiere. It sounds like a gem of a reboot, so check back with Cord Cutters News as more details are announced.
