Another cable TV network is closing its doors after more than 30 years.
TV Japan, which delivers Japanese-language content in North America, will air its last broadcast on March 31. The company will move its offerings to a new streaming service called Jme. The streaming service will launch on March 20 and cost $25 a month before taxes, according to the network’s website.
“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of our viewers for choosing TV JAPAN as your source of Japanese entertainment and news,” TV Japan said in a statement.
TV Japan is one of the latest cable TV networks to shut down amid the rise of cord cutting around the world. Viewers are migrating to streaming services in droves. As a result, cable TV stations are struggling to stay afloat.
A number of Disney networks, including Disney Junior and FXX, were taken off from Spectrum’s deal with Walt Disney last summer, raising the question of whether weaker performing cable networks will be shuttered or move to streaming.
TV Japan said Jme will offer live NHK news, the latest dramas, popular movies. TV Japan said customers who register for Jme between March 20 and April 30 will get a 30-day free trial.
“With Jme, you’ll have the flexibility to enjoy your favorite Japanese programs from the comfort of your home or on the go,” TV Japan said.
