The BBC is Coming to Discovery’s New Cord Cutting Streaming Service

earthIn April, the BBC and Discovery announced a deal to end their joint TV deal in the UK. BBC Studios is paying Discovery $225 million and Discovery is taking full control of the UK channels Good Food, Home and Really.

Part of this deal is that BBC Studio’s natural history programs will be joining the new service in areas outside the UK, Ireland, and China. This will line up well with Discovery’s content from the History Channel, HGTV, Science, and other networks.

Last year, Discovery’s CEO opened up about their new streaming plans: “We will be looking hard at that both domestically and internationally. We could create a pretty compelling offering for $6, $7 or $8 that would look a lot different than Amazon Prime and Netflix, and it could be very attractive in every language globally. So, we’ll keep our eye on that.”

“We started Dreams to redesign TV for your phone,” said co-founder Tom Bender. “We wanted a home screen icon for fun, free TV.”

“As the global leader in real life entertainment, Discovery is excited to extend the reach of its high-quality and trusted brands through Dreams,” said Bruce Campbell, chief development, distribution and legal officer at Discovery. “The four made-for-mobile channels we are launching on Dreams give us a unique opportunity to showcase our deeply loved current content and future shows to mobile viewers in a bespoke format curated specifically to them.”

According to Discovery, this new service will launch sometime in 2020.
