Last week Amazon announced a DVR specially built for the Fire TV. The Fire TV Recast comes in two versions: the 2 tuner, 500 GB, 75-hour version is $229.99. The 4 tuner, 1 TB, 150-hour version is $279.99.
Many readers have asked if they could add an external hard drive to expand that storage like they could with the Tablo DVR. According to Amazon, you cannot add external storage to your Fire TV Recast. At least at launch but Amazon says they plan to add it.
Update: According to Amazon’s FAQ about the Fire TV Recast there is no external storage support. “No – Fire TV Recast does not support external hard drives.” Yet Amazon has released a press statement saying they are working on it for a later date.
For most people, the 150 hours of DVR storage is likely more than enough. However, if you are someone who needs more storage you may want to look at a different DVR.
