DVRs are a great way to take full advantage of your antenna by accessing all the free content available over the air when and how you want it. We often get asked what the best DVR for cord cutters is, so we decided to take that question to our readers.

Last week we asked over 4,000 of our readers a long list of cord cutting questions. One of the questions was “What DVR do you use for your antenna.” Tablo DVRs were the most popular DVRs with our readers for the second year in a row.

Here is the breakdown of the top 7 DVRs for cord cutters:

  1. Tablo
  2. TiVo
  3. Fire TV Recast
  4. Plex
  5. HDHomeRun
  6. Channel Master
  7. AirTV

What is maybe most interesting is the jump of the Fire TV Recast from #5 up to #3 behind Tivo just one year after it was announced.

Tablo has been working hard to make their DVR #1. Recently they added built-in automatic commercial skipping. Tablo has also rolled out a new four-tuner DVR with the option to add an internal hard drive. Tivo and Amazon have both reportedly been working on a commercial skipping feature but it has not been officially released to all Fire TV customers at this time.

What was maybe most surprising was the fact that most antenna users do not use a DVR with their antenna. Most cord cutters seem happy either watching live or not at all. This likely points to how a growing number of cord cutters see live TV as something for live events, sports, and news. Beyond that, many cord cutters seem to want their programs on-demand.
