T-Mobile’s Free Netflix Perk May Soon Come With Ads For Some Users

T-Mobile’s “Netflix On Us” perk, which offers subscribers of its more recent plans access to the streaming service for free, will undergo some big changes.

Customers who receive the Netflix “basic” plan will be converted to a standard plan that comes with ads, according to The Mobile Report, which uncovered internal documents detailing the change. Customers who want to keep their ad-free plan will have to pay $8.50 a month, which represents a $6.99 discount from Netflix’s listed price. The changes are expected to happen on January 24.

A spokesperson for T-Mobile wasn’t immediately available to confirm that the changes would happen.

The changes come to what’s been a marquee feature for T-Mobile, touted in ads, and is a perk that has remained even as rivals AT&T and Verizon dropped their own free streaming perks. T-Mobile has held firm despite numerous price changes by the streaming giant. In October, Netflix raised the price of its premium plan and brought back its basic plan at a higher rate. This came on top of price increases in 2022, which saw the debut of the ad-based tier.

This also comes after T-Mobile unveiled new perks that include free Apple TV+ and Hulu for customers on its more expensive Go5G Next plans.

There are some positive trade-offs for the move to the ad-based tier. Customers previously on the basic plan will see the quality of their video bumped up to the 1080p found on the ad-based standard tier, and they’ll be able to watch it on two screens at the same time. Beyond the $8.50 ad-free standard plan, there’s also the premium tier, which costs $16, which is also a $6.99 discount from Netflix’s listed price.

T-Mobile will alert affected customers starting today, according to The Mobile Report.
