T-Mobile Will Be Cutting Off 5G Home Internet Customers Who Move Without Telling T-Mobile Unless They Pay More

Last April, T-Mobile announced plans to launch new internet plans with the T-Mobile Home Internet Plus and Away. This comes as T-Mobile customers will now be limited to using their home internet service to their home location instead of taking it with them. If you want to take your home internet system with you outside of your home location, you will need to switch to the new and more expensive Away package.

Now, according to a report from The Mobile Report, T-Mobile will start to enforce its location rules on customers. T-Mobile will use the built in GPS to verify you are at the location you say you are. If the box is not located there customers will get an error message that you are no longer using your home internet at the location you told T-Mobile about.

If you are hit with this error message, you will need to return to the original registered location of the box or register a new location for it with T-Mobile.

If you are unable to do one or the other, you will need to switch plans to the Home Internet Lite or the new, more expensive Away plan. If those options don’t work for you, the last option is to cancel your service altogether. The only way to do any of this is to contact support.

T-Mobile tries to make sure it limits the number of customers in each area so it won’t over load its network. Customers who move without telling T-Mobile could overload the network resulting in poor performance.

According to The Mobile Report, enforcement of these new rules will start on June 20, 2024.

Here is how T-Mobile describes these new plans:

  • Home Internet Plus:
    • T-Mobile’s Latest 5G Gateway and Mesh Included. Expand the Wi-Fi signal across the home and in hard-to-reach places, with up to 2,200 square feet of additional coverage. Mesh can intelligently adjust coverage to where it’s needed most, so parents can seamlessly work in the home office while the kids are gaming downstairs — no more dealing with multiple Wi-Fi networks with different nicknames and passwords.
    • 24/7 Tech Support for Smart Home Devices. With Assurant Personal TechPro, customers can get help setting up, troubleshooting and managing all their smart home devices like laptops, tablets, doorbells, thermostats, smart TVs and more. Live experts can provide support over the phone, on chat and even through screen and camera sharing for step-by-step help.
  • Away:
    • A 5G Gateway Included. Get the freedom and flexibility of Wi-Fi on the go without equipment charges. Connect up to 64 devices at a time and say goodbye to public Wi-Fi.
    • An Unlimited Data Option. Get unlimited Wi-Fi while traveling across the U.S. without data overages or a cutoff.
    • Nationwide Coverage. Stay connected nationwide across T-Mobile’s network — which is just about everywhere since T-Mobile’s 5G network covers two million square miles — more than AT&T and Verizon combined.
