T-Mobile Wants To Tap AI to Better Run its Network and Customer Service

Taking advantage of the rise in artificial intelligence is all the rage, and T-Mobile is jumping on the bandwagon. The carrier and its parent, Deutsche Telekom, are making AI the central theme of its annual innovators competition.

The companies said that for its fourth annual T Challenge competition, they will look at three areas where AI can help: Network management, customer service and experience, and applied AI in general.

T-Mobile is the latest in a long line of companies looking to tap into the technology, which blew up this year thanks to the popularity of ChatGPT and new generative AI systems. The latest generation of AI is sophisticated enough to write stories or code, and companies are looking at different ways AI can be employed to better run their businesses. The rise of AI, however, comes as experts warn of the unintended risks that come from developing the systems without oversight, prompting President Joe Biden to issue an executive order on the technology.

“AI has the potential to usher in a whole new era of innovation and efficiencies not only for our network but for businesses and consumers as well,” said John Saw, EVP and chief technology officer at T-Mobile. “T Challenge is an excellent opportunity to support developers in actualizing their technologies and be at the forefront of the AI wave.”

“Every year, the T-Challenge sends a signal for innovative strength. Now we want to use artificial intelligence in an innovative way,” said Claudia Nemat, member of the board of management for technology and innovation at Deutsche Telekom.

The T Challenge competition runs through January 26, 2024. The companies will choose 12 finalists, who will showcase their projects to a panel of judges from T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom at the German telecom giant’s headquarters in Bonn, Germany.

Here are the awards for the competition:

  • First Place: €150,000 (or equivalent)
