Superhero Movies & Shows Top Nielsen’s Streaming Chart

It seems like viewers are really into superhero movies these days. Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier made it to the top of Nielsen’s streaming list for the week ending April 11, with 748 million minutes watched across the four episodes. On the movie side, Netflix’s super-powered Thunder Force starring Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer almost hit 1 billion minutes. The comedy film pulled in 950 million minutes during the week.

“A couple interesting things about Falcon…the majority of the viewing is coming from older episodes,” said Brian Fuhrer, Nielsen’s SVP of Product Strategy. “In fact, episode three was almost as big as episode four this week. So We expect that to continue. It has longevity, that episodic release schedule that we talk about is gaining traction.”

Fuhrer also noted that the viewer demographics for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Thunder Force mirrored each other, with 60% of Falcon’s viewers male, while 60% of those who watched Thunder Force were female.

Netflix continued to dominate the other titles on the movie chart with What Lies Below in second place and Concrete Cowboy starring Idris Elba in third. Moana is Disney+’s ace in the hole for getting the streamer placed on the top 10 list (What can I say except, You’re Welcome!), with Raya and the Last Dragon also securing a spot at number 8.
