Another imaginative alternate NFL telecast is coming to a screen near you. ESPN, Disney, Pixar, and the NFL are teaming up to bring Monsters Funday Football to the Monday Night Football stage on December 8.

The special telecast will transform the Philadelphia Eagles vs. Los Angeles Chargers matchup into a real-time, animated game set inside Monsters, Inc.’s Monstropolis. The family-friendly presentation will run alongside the traditional ESPN/ABC broadcast and will be available across ESPN2, Disney+, Disney Channel, Disney XD, ESPN App, and NFL+ — with video-on-demand arriving on Disney+ after the live event.

The game inside Monstropolis isn’t just a simple themed overlay. Every NFL player will appear as a motion-enabled animated version of themselves, powered by the NFL’s Next Gen Stats and advanced tracking technology. The virtual recreation engine animates gameplay in real time, so what you see in Monstropolis mirrors the action at SoFi Stadium.

The telecast will feature staples of Monsters, Inc., including floating bedroom doors, a reimagined Scarer’s Leaderboard, and Mike and Sulley appearing for big moments via prerecorded lines. ESPN commentators, Drew Carter (play-by-play) and Dan Orlovsky (analyst), will call the action from an animated booth while social correspondent Katie Feeney supplies behind-the-scenes content.

Expanding the NFL Audience with Family-First Broadcasts

Beyond the spectacle, Monsters Funday Football is another example of the NFL leaning into alternative, family-first telecasts that broaden the sport’s audience. These creative broadcasts make live football more accessible and engaging for younger viewers, animation fans, and those yearning for nostalgia, while providing casual or family audiences with a clear and entertaining entry point into live sports. They also provide brands and partners with new, attention-grabbing ways to connect with viewers across linear and streaming platforms.

“Each iteration of Funday Football has pushed the boundary of what’s possible in sports technology. By blending real-time NFL data and tracking with cutting-edge animation, we’re transforming the way fans experience an NFL game,” said Michael “Spike” Szykowny, ESPN VP, Graphics Innovation. “Our continued innovation with partners like the NFL, Beyond Sports and Disney+ showcases how technology can turn a live game into a fully immersive world, giving fans an additional way to consume sports.”

With this Monstropolis broadcast, the NFL continues a trend of partnering with nontraditional networks and formats to present live games in fresh ways. Recent experiments have included Nick-led youth-oriented telecasts, including the first animated Super Bowl telecast, a Simpsons-themed game, a Toy Story recreation, and even an animated Madden-style presentation on streaming platforms. The Simpsons and Toy Story broadcasts were critically acclaimed, with the former receiving multiple Sports Emmy nominations and the latter winning three, among others.

By building on these past collaborations, the NFL and its partners have refined the production tools and creative approach that make a Monsters, Inc. telecast possible. As a bonus, the alt-telecast proves that there’s an audience hungry for novel viewing experiences on the gridiron.
