Big picture, the broadcast networks have steadily become the home of live sports, news and reality competition, Nathanson said. In other words, programming (and advertising) that is being consumed live. To put it into perspective, season to date live programming represents between 45 percent (on ABC) to 75 percent (at NBC) of gross ratings points.
The shift in consumption and programming patterns has all but killed the 30-minute broadcast sitcom with only 6 percent of gross ratings points (GRPs) now coming from the genre, the analyst added.
If it was not for their stranglehold on live events, such as sports, cable TV would have collapsed a long time ago.
Yet 2016 may mark the end of cable TVs live sports, news, and other live events stranglehold as Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, SFN TV Now, and others have launched ways for cord cutters to get access to live events via streaming.
As more and more people release that they can watch content when they want and how they want cable is quickly feeling the squeeze of cord cutters and cord shavers. Even the price point to get into streaming is dropping. Right now you can get a quad-core Roku player brand new for $39. Cable really is just a thing of the past for many Americans, even for ones who will pay for Cable TV.
