While drama, comedy, and more may be common go-to’s when picking a movie, consumer streaming habits show viewers are preferring titles that fall under Action, Adventure and Thriller genres the most right now.

According to data from Reelgood, audiences can’t seem to get enough of the genre, and increasingly streamed Action & Adventure and Thriller movies by the end of 2021. That stat checks out when we look at some of the most popular shows and movies from last year, including the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe which is absolutely killing it right now streaming on Disney+, as well as movies like Red Notice, No Time to Die, A Quiet Place Part II, and more. And who can forget the waves made around the world from Netflix’s Korean thriller Squid Game?

While there are quite a few action/thriller shows and movies streaming out there, Reelgood’s data shows despite increased viewership, these genres have declined significantly in shares of SVOD catalogs. Viewing preferences are shifting again as the pandemic slowly ends, and there’s an active opportunity for SVODs to license or acquire content of these genres.

Prime Video leads the ranking of the most extensive Action & Adventure catalogs. Meanwhile, HBO Max leads with the most streaming activity, with a
gain of nine share points. Prime Video and Netflix continue leading the SVOD ranking with the largest catalogs and most-streamed Thriller movies.

In contrast, streaming services increased their investments in Documentary, Family, and Animation movies by the end of 2021 as the pandemic was still peaking, although this hasn’t translated into increased consumption of these titles. Instead, Reelgood data shows that a simultaneous decline in consumption
accompanied the genres that have grown the most in SVOD movie catalogs.
