ESPN is making a significant move to expand its reach by integrating its content into the Disney+ streaming platform. Starting today, Disney+ subscribers with an ESPN+ subscription will be able to access ESPN programming directly through a dedicated ESPN tile within the Disney+ app.
This integration is just the first step in a broader strategy. Next fall, ESPN plans to launch a new “flagship” streaming service, which will be fully accessible to subscribers through the same ESPN tile on Disney+.
Expanding Access to Live Sports
To entice Disney+ users to explore ESPN’s offerings, the network is making around 100 live games available to Disney+ subscribers even if they don’t have a separate ESPN+ subscription. These games will span a variety of popular sports, including college football and basketball, NBA, WNBA, NHL, MLB, tennis, golf, and more.
Exclusive Content and Integration
ESPN is also developing two new studio shows exclusively for Disney+ viewers. One will be a daily “SportsCenter” tailored for a Disney+ audience, and the other will focus on women’s sports.
In addition to live games and exclusive shows, ESPN will make some of its popular studio programming, podcasts with video components, and sports-related films and documentaries available on Disney+. The platform’s search function will also be integrated with ESPN content, making it easier for users to find what they’re looking for.
Strategic Rationale
“Our goal is to serve sports fans anytime, anywhere,” said ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro. He highlighted the diverse audience reach of Disney+, which includes families, general entertainment enthusiasts, and now, sports fans.
Pitaro acknowledged that there is currently little overlap between ESPN’s linear TV audience and Disney+ viewers. By introducing ESPN content to Disney+, the network aims to tap into new demographics, particularly the platform’s strong female viewership.
This move represents a significant step in ESPN’s evolving strategy to reach a wider audience and adapt to the changing landscape of sports consumption. It also reinforces the value proposition of the Disney+ bundle, offering subscribers a comprehensive entertainment experience.
