Charter Communications the parent company of Spectrum has officially classified a deliberate attack on its communications network in Van Nuys on June 15 as an act of domestic terrorism, citing the extensive damage and severe disruption to critical services. The assault, which severed 13 cables and over 2,600 individual fibers, caused widespread outages that impacted a U.S. military base, emergency dispatch and 911 services, local law enforcement, financial institutions, and healthcare facilities. The disruption, lasting up to 30 hours, affected over 50,000 residential customers and more than 500 businesses.

The early morning attack targeted vital telecommunications infrastructure, highlighting what Charter describes as a growing national threat. “These criminal attacks on our country’s vital communications networks are intentional and cause outages that put lives at risk,” said Chris Winfrey, President and CEO of Charter Communications, in a statement condemning the incident. “This is a pervasive and persistent threat to American families and businesses that cannot be tolerated. Such life-threatening events should be declared acts of domestic terrorism and prosecuted accordingly.”

Winfrey called for immediate legislative action at both federal and state levels to classify such attacks as felonies, urging law enforcement to prioritize investigations and prosecutions. The Van Nuys incident is part of a troubling trend, with industry data reporting nearly 6,000 intentional attacks on U.S. telecommunications infrastructure between June and December 2024. These acts of sabotage have jeopardized access to essential services for over 1.5 million Americans.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defines domestic terrorism as “violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences.” While the motives behind the Van Nuys attack are still under investigation, the significant impact on critical infrastructure aligns with the FBI’s criteria. The outage disrupted emergency services and military operations, underscoring the potential for such acts to threaten public safety and national security.

Los Angeles City Councilman John Lee, representing Van Nuys, echoed Charter’s concerns, emphasizing the broader implications of these attacks. “The rise in deliberate attacks on critical communications infrastructure poses a significant threat to national security,” Lee said. “These disruptions impact military bases, emergency services, and impose substantial financial burdens on taxpayers and local governments. Safeguarding our communications infrastructure is vital for creating safe, resilient communities.”

To aid in apprehending those responsible, Spectrum, a Charter Communications brand, is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The company has established a dedicated tip line at 833-404-TIPS (8477) and encourages the public to report any relevant information to local law enforcement.

Charter Communications has vowed to continue labeling such attacks as domestic terrorism to raise awareness and drive a unified response. The investigation into the Van Nuys incident remains ongoing, with authorities working to identify the perpetrators and prevent future attacks. As the nation grapples with this escalating threat, Charter’s call for stronger protections and stricter penalties underscores the urgent need to safeguard America’s critical infrastructure.
